30cms...

was all that stood between me and success in finding the first cache yesterday!

as planned i did another caching run, this time to find 2 caches - Acton Action which i didn't find yesterday & Keyring Circus...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 21.0/29%
start time: 1:10pm
total distance: 7.72
total (running) time: 42:18
avg pace: 5:29
total calories: 579
avg HR: 151
finish temp/humidity: 22.4/28%

with a tip from Jodie i headed back to Acton Action (2.30k, 11:54, 5:10)...the cache was located 30cms from where i had poked around yesterday - i found it, exchanged items and signed the log within 6mins of arriving!...next i was off to Keyring Circus in Lennox Gardens, 800m as the crow flies (2.85k, 15:21, 5:23)...on this leg i did 10 x 30secs on/off as well...actually found this one without any trouble at except for actually reaching the cache itself!...found this one, exchanged items and filled in the log with 11mins (hardest thing was retrieving & replacing the cache)...then it was back to work (2.57k, 15:03, 5:51)....and to top off a successful run, the weather was much more pleasant than yesterday...

Slack record keeping...

now that i'm not sticking to a running training program i find i'm being quite slack about my blogging!

Saturday

had my massage pre-golf due to Jodie's birthday party/BBQ preparations in the afternoon...must have fired me up for golf because i broke 90 for the second week in a row and managed to win!

good party for Jodie...her mum, brother, sister-in-law & nephew were in attendance as were my parents...lots of food, lots of talking, lots of fun...

Sunday

off to Sydney for cricket with a passenger in tow (one of my Meteor team-mates)...we lost this match by 79 runs...we fielded first while they made 2/222, i got a catch & a stumping...should have been 2 catches but for the 4th time this season it was given not out...this was the best i've kept all season...however only made 2 with the bat before mishitting a pull shot to lob a catch to midwicket...

Monday

rest day with fielding training in the afternoon which went really well...Jodie ran this session while the coach was interstate...

Tuesday

Posture & Flexibility at lunch otherwise another restful day!

Wednesday

decided to do my run at lunchtime as a caching adventure...attempted 3 caches...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 31.6/15%
start time: 12:48pm
total distance: 9.01
total (running) time: 50:38
avg pace: 5:38
total calories: 675
avg HR: 153
finish temp/humidity: 32.3/15%

the first cache (Acton Action) was around near the National Museum (2.79k 14:57 5:22)...found all the required info & did all the calculations but didn't find it after about 20mins of searching (Jodie however has confirmed i was in the right spot, i just need to look harder)...the second cache (The Thin Blue Line) was around near the new Police Memorial near the Carillon (3.88k 22:01 5:41)...again found all the necessary info BUT used the wrong numbers to work out the final location because i mis-read the directions (that were at work so i couldn't double-check)...after about 10mins of being puzzled at what i had figured out to be the final location (a lamp post!) i headed off on my third & final leg (Cunning Capital Capers) which was near the Legislative Assembly (2.34k 13:40 5:50)...i was thinking if i didn't find this one at least i wouldn't have far to go back to work!...however success was had this time although i stuffed up the final co-ords initially after subtracting instead of adding 23 as per the directions (d'oh)...

obviously hard mental & physical work in warm conditions!

had a net session after work at Manuka for 90mins....had both a good bowl & a good bat so that was fun...

on the way home, found The Thin Blue Line cache after using the correct numbers!

Thursday

might do another caching run at lunch and we have another centre wicket practice at the Mint after work...last skills work before we head to Melbourne on Sunday...

for those that are interested we are playing at Central Reserve in Glen Waverley...we play Queensland on Monday, Victoria on Tuesday, Tasmania on Wednesday & NSW on Thursday with the bye on Friday...all matches are 50 overs per innings starting at 10am...

24 November 2006

Oh so sllooowwww...

good net session last night, we even had the guys there from the AIS measuring our bowling speed...got a bit competitive amongst the youngsters but i always say it's not about speed but what you can do with the ball...and, oh yes, i was the fastest despite being the oldest - top speed 99kph, mostly between 95-97kph, slow ball 90kph...

this morning's fitness session was tough, we had a different trainer because our regular trainer is participating in the Hartley Cycle Challenge (from Canberra to Kosciusko and back over three days)...a bit of running, lots of squats, a circuit x 2, ab work, lunges, calf raises etc etc...

Customs was well attended despite the warm weather...managed to stay (just) below my self-imposed acceptable standard of 25:00...i'll be glad when the extra cricket training is over!

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 25.0/32%
start time: 12:30pm
total distance: 5.00
total time: 24:55
avg pace: 4:59
total calories: 374
avg HR: 164
finish temp/humidity: 26.0/30%

1k splits: 4:42, 5:00, 4:58, 5:04, 5:11

finished second last but at least i was out there (although i wasn't feeling quite so comfortable at the time)...no Jodie & Gordon today (slackers)...

the cricket's at an interesting stage with Ponting & Gilchrist falling in the same over...i'm sure Clarke & Warne will provide some entertaining batting!

tomorrow we are celebrating Jodie's 40th birthday with a BBQ at our place...although she's a Christmas baby she's always celebrated a month early (& manages to make it last the month as well!!)...Suze is doing the cooking, whilst the other attendees are bringing variously salads, munchies and dessert (provided by mum after a special request - lemon meringue pie & pavlova!!)...

i'm still fitting in a massage & round of golf (in that order) before the party...

sunday i'm off to Sydney for our match v Wallsend at Killara...last club match before the CA Cup at Central Reserve, Glen Waverley (4-8 December)...we fly out Sunday & play 4 consecutive days with our bye on the Friday...

23 November 2006

DEWR/Hartley Lifecare Challenge Team 5k...

i guess there were about 30 of us out there in quite warm conditions...

we got underway almost on time..i think we went a slightly different way this time by running down the bike path past the Museum dock before heading around the peninsula (instead of past the Museum cafe)...

bit of a headwind once we got around the Museum which did NOT turn into a tailwind (always the way) on the return trip where we did go past the Museum cafe...

i finished 17th & ended up being 2nd female, 29secs behind the winner...i lead her briefly (for about 400m) before she passed me, staying about 200-300m in front the rest of the way...Jodie worked really hard & managed another sub 30:00 time after i managed to lure her in with the Freddo Frog offer! (and they were the big fundraising ones too!!)

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 28.0/16%
start time: 12:46pm
total distance: 5.05
total time: 23:43
avg pace: 4:42
total calories: 377 [A giant Freddo Frog = 200]

finish temp/humidity: 29.3/9%

1k splits: 4:27, 4:42, 4:40, 5:03, 4:38, 0:13

1:07 slower than last year but comparable to the times i'm running for Customs at the moment...

Warm & windy...

the ride home on Tuesday night wasn't quite as wild as i predicted but it was certainly windy and quite warm...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 33.9/9%
start time: 5:54pm
total distance: 15.57
total time: 47:08 (actual moving 45:52)
avg/max speed: 19.8/32.6kph
total calories: 434
avg/max HR: 124/149
avg cadence: 72rpm
finish temp/humidity: 32.1/10%

yesterday i got caught up buying a wireless broadband access package from Telstra at lunchtime so didn't get around to heading out for a run...probably the best though because it was quite windy & warm again!

in the afternoon we finally managed to get a centre wicket practice in...we played on the synthetic pitch at the front of the Mint...managed to fit in 50 overs worth of play in just over 2hrs...

today i'm planning to do the Hartley 5k Fun Run from the Acton Ferry Terminal (12.45pm start)...the "each entrant will receive a Freddo Frog" line is the main attraction plus the $2.50 sausage sizzle available afterwards...

after work we have a short net session at Manuka...i'm going early to help one of the players with some extra batting drills before training proper starts...

21 November 2006

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday...

Sunday

watched most of the WNCL match between the NSW Breakers and the Victoria Spirit at the SCG before heading to my Twenty20 match at Bankstown...

NSW were a bit disappointing with the bat (all out 139) and didn't really give their bowlers a chance of winning the game...still makes it an interesting start to the season for them...the previous day NSW had beaten Victoria...

on the club front, we played UTS Balmain in our Twenty20 match, batting first and making 79 which they got in about 12-13 overs for the loss of only 1 wicket...got home just after 8.30pm...

Monday

played the final of the match play (golf) in the morning and managed to win 5 up with 4 holes to play...carried on my form from the back 9 on Saturday (+3) to the front 9 yesterday (+2), stumbled a bit on holes 11-12 but had a big enough lead to win...if i could string these 2 nines together consistently i might make it to a single figure handicap one day!

after icing my heel/ankle several times throughout the day, i switched to my old spikes for fielding training last night and didn't seem to have anywhere near the problems i'd had last week so that's a positive thing (will still see the sports doctor in december but hopefully i'll be right for my week of cricket in melbourne)...

Tuesday

rode to work this morning, with temps predicted to reach the mid-30s it was already 15 degrees at 7.30am...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 15.2/51%
start time: 7.30am
total distance: 15.46
total time: 41:51 (actual moving 40"57)
avg/max speed: 22.2/38.9kph
total calories: 463
avg/max HR: 111/135
avg cadence: 70rpm
finish temp/humidity: 19.3/36%

back to "Posture & Flexibility" at lunch where we focused on the shoulders & neck...

i'm predicting a wild & windy ride on the way home tonight in the heat...

One Peak Challenge Results:

there were 54 runners (22 men & 32 women)...i managed to finish 29th overall (13th woman)...my official time was 1:29:45...

18 November 2006

Mt Majura One Peak Challenge...

early start to the morning for this event - up @ 5.30am! i'm glad it was only just down the road...

checked in just before 6am to pick up my number (113)...bumped into Tuggeranong Don who upgraded from the One Peak to the Two Peak...returned to the car for 15mins or so before heading over to the start...the conditions were almost perfect with hardly a breath of wind...

we got underway only a couple of minutes late...my aim for the run was 90mins given i'm not the best on the up hills...

surprised myself by managing to run (i use this word loosely!) to the first drinks station which was where the Two Peakers turned left for Mt Ainslie while we One Peakers got to head down hill for a bit...probably got overtaken by 4-5 runners going up to this station although i suspect most were Two Peakers...

after taking a drink at the 1st station (manned by Carol Harding) i elected to not stop at the 2nd one at the Mackenzie St/Grayson St point (did get a "Go CoolRunner" call from the attendant though)...by this stage there was about a 200m gap either side of me...

maintained a pretty steady pace to the 3rd drinks station manned by Emma Murray...along the way got to say hello to quite a few walkers (some with dogs) who were probably wondering what was going on...

after the 3rd drink station i started to make steady ground on a runner in front of me who seemed to be taking quite a few walking breaks...i eventually passed her on the walking trail about 10mins after climbing over the stile - it was hard to maintain a rhythm here due to the steps...the fire trail up to the top of Mt Majura was a challenge (definite understatement here! )and more walking breaks occurred here...

once through the fence at the top i started to catch another runner on the road....about halfway down i passed her and got maybe 20-30m ahead and then she started to gain again on me...we probably run the last third of the road within a metre or so of each other and came through the gate at the bottom into the paddock almost side by side...an excellent tussle...

fortunately i was able to hit my "flat running" stride fairly quickly and steadily pulled away over the last k to finish about 300-400m in front of her...my time showed 1:29:46 so i was pretty pleased with that...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 5.9/91%
start time: 6:34am
total distance: 15.06
total time: 1:29:46
avg pace: 5:57
total calories: 1133
avg HR: 160
finish temp/humidity: 11.1/70%

[i'll post some pictures once i've downloaded the info]

got my finisher's bottle of wine & then had a drink or two (not alcoholic!) and a good chat with Gary (who claims i'm stalking him because we keep ending up at the same events!)...Gary had finished not long after the female winner (Jane Zeller) in around 1:12:00-1:13:00...

birthday boy Stuart Doyle won the Two Peaks in around 1:45 with a gap back to Trevor Jacobs and then Andy Hogg...

also caught up briefly with Nick and Doug from Customs...Doug was especially pleased to finish just outside 2:00:00 for the One Peak after not doing any long runs for about 3 months...

headed back towards home, getting petrol & breakfast before showering and getting ready for golf...

today was also excellent weather for golf although the wind had kicked up a little...after not playing for two weeks i had a very poor front 9 (+12) which could have been worse except for a birdie on the 9th...somehow i managed to finish well with +3 on the back to shoot 88 off the stick (my first score in the 80s since January!)...managed to finish 2nd on a count back...

in a day for wine, i picked up 4 bottles for the Nearest The Pin effort from a fortnight ago...

then it was over to mum & dad's for a massage (and to drop off some of the wine!)...

i'm actually quite surprised by how well i've pulled up after the run although tomorrow may be another story!!

17 November 2006

Friday...

our "optional" net/fielding session last night practically became compulsory after we hadn't managed a training session all week due to the weird weather...my right ankle was quite painful again making everything a chore - i bowled & batted but pretty much opted out of the fielding...

this morning's Meteors fitness session was a combination of jogging, plyometrics, core work and stretching...a hard session...

the team for Melbourne was announced and we only have 12 named with one of the 12 under a fitness cloud...interesting...we have 4 back to back matches so it's going to be physically & mentally tiring with the added pressure of no replacements...

another big turnout at Customs in almost perfect conditions...we had a couple of the competitors down for the Long Distance Triathlon World Champs running with us...my ankle was bugging me but not as much as last night so i ran anyway! (besides i'm leading the point-score, i can't quit now!!)...i have however made an appointment to see my sports doctor but it won't be until 11 December after the cricket champs (4-8 december) which was the earliest i could get in...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 16.0/34%
start time: 12:30pm
total distance: 5.00
total time: 23:53
avg pace: 4:47
total calories: 374
avg HR: 163
finish temp/humidity: 16.8/34%

1k splits: 4:47, 4:58, 4:47, 4:42, 4:39

i'm not disappointed with the run as my ankle was hampering me...Jodie however managed her 2nd fastest Customs time ever with 28:36 - she thinks it's because i've "dragged" her along to other races (Jogalong, Ben Donohoe Fun Run), perhaps the extra "racing" has helped (on top of the other stuff she's been doing)...FlashDuck was there as was LuckyLegs...

the weekend ahead:
saturday - One Peak Challenge (6.30am!) + golf + massage
sunday - watch some of NSW Breakers v Victoria Spirit WNCL match at the SCG (10am start) before playing in a Twenty20 match @ Bankstown (3.30pm)

quite windy out there today, so much so that i got thoroughly soaked by the water from the Captain Cook Memorial Jet!...15-17kts with gusts up to 25kts...most of the efforts were done into the wind so i'm fairly pleased with the outcome...

ran past the transition area (Rond Terrace) for the Triathlon World Champs which are taking place on Sunday...saw a few competitors out riding/running on the course...hope the weather is kind to them on the day!...good luck to FlashDrake & all the other Aussies!

looks like we'll actually be in the nets @ Manuka tonight in spite of yesterday's rain...

Too cold...

no running yesterday & no cricket training either with the quite bizarre cold snap...

planning on doing another Mona Fartlek session today as well as the "optional" cricket net/fielding session (which i think everyone will be attending seeing as we haven't had any training this week) after work...

sunday plans update: even though we have 2 Twenty20 matches to play (12.30pm & 3.30pm @ Bankstown), i'm only playing the 3.30pm one (v UTS Balmain) so that i can go watch some of the NSW Breakers v Victoria Spirit match @ the SCG (starting 10am)...opening round of the season for both teams so should be a good clash...

Mt Ainslie Run Up #2

rode to work this morning and ,boy, it was chilly! they even reckon there will be snow on the Brindabellas tomorrow!!

it did however warm up a bit by the time i was to head off to Mt Ainslie...also took the opportunity to lodge my Mt Majura One Peak Challenge entry with John Harding (mountain running event organiser extraordinaire)...biggish turnout & we got to give Julie Quinn a clap - she'd won the women's section of the World Rogaining Champs last month (with Heather Logie), this was her 3rd consecutive title and she was thus named ACT Female Sports Star of the Month for October...

it was quite warm on the run & windy as well (although mostly sheltered on the way to the top)...

while not as "quick" as my first effort last month, i was pretty happy with it...also did ride to work for my last run so that might have made a difference (perhaps grsaping at straws here?! LOL...)

13 November 2006

Week ahead...

Monday - fielding session (now switched to a whiteboard session due to the inclement weather)

Tuesday - Mt Ainslie Run Up (instead of "Posture & Flexibility" in preparation for Saturday)

Wednesday - easy run; centre wicket session

Thursday - Mona Fartlek; net session

Friday - fitness session; Customs

Saturday - Mt Majura 15k One Peak Challenge; golf; massage

Sunday - 2 x Twenty20 matches @ Bankstown

Catch up post...

Friday
hard work out in the morning with a circuit session @ Kingston Oval, followed by a quick shower @ Jodie's work then a BBQ breakfast @ Telopea Park with the cricket girls...

good seats @ the PM's game (joined by mum, dad & Jodie's brother) saw us enjoy some excellent batting by the PM's XI which they then followed up with some good bowling & fielding...

the Poms looked lethargic, particularly fast bowler Sajid Mahmood who went for 97 off only 9 overs....Freddie did look good though even if his 10 overs went for 55...

love watching Jaques bat, he deserves to be in the test side particularly after he followed this innings up with another ton on Sunday...

after the early finish, headed home before going out to the nets @ Amaroo school to do some throw downs for Jodie & Suze who were filling in for a local team on Sunday...

Saturday
Jodie & I both had good runs @ the Ben Donohoe Walk & Run for Fun (6k)...i managed 27:23 while Jodie surprised herself with 34:XX...

after calling past the PO on the way home, had a shower & did some stuff online before heading off to Sydney...

about 12 of us attended our club's Tenpin bowling night @ Hornsby then headed to the RSL for dinner...

Sunday
we got flogged...so much so that the match was all over by the scheduled lunch break...at least i got to go home early...

unfortunately being home early meant i had to do the grocery shopping for the second week in a row...

with the aim to keep the efforts around 5k pace (sub 4:30 for me), i was pretty pleased with the results...typically (!) too fast on my first effort but reasonably consistent on all the others except the last 30sec one....

Steve Moneghetti used to do this once a week...sounds like a good idea to me!

monday - not much other than fielding training @ Manuka & as a result i am currently nursing a bruised right hand...

Weekend wrap...

Saturday

up at 6.00am for a 7.05am start! excellent day to play golf - this was a 2 person team event (4 Ball Best Ball)...managed to get my name down for the "ladies" nearest the pin on the 2nd after somehow fluking it with a good tee shot to within 62cm!!...my partner & I managed 42pts while Suze & her partner managed 38pts...

with the game all over before lunch we still had a day to do things...sooo, called passed mum & dad's to solve a computer issue for them (well Suze did!)...they are off to Ulladulla on Sunday to see a boat & maybe do some whale watching (back Tuesday)...then lazed away the rest of the afternoon, watching TV, reading the paper & a book!

had dinner at Zefferelli's in Belconnen before seeing "The Wrong Man" at the movies...quite an interesting plot...

Sunday

opened the paper to find that my partner & I had won the women's section of the golf while I had managed to hold on to the nearest the pin...woo hoo...

the whole household headed down to the Women & Girls Jogalong...we all did the 6k with Suze starting (walking with Hux) in Group 2, Jodie in Group 19 & yours truly in Group 41...

good to catch up with Tuggeranong Don and quite a few fellow Customs Joggers (Doug, Nick, Tim, Gabrielle...)...

my Group was the last to go & there were 4 of us...pretty pleased with how i ran - a PB for the course proper by about 1 minute (October 05 & January 06 where shortened courses while November 05 i ran it in 28:40)...nice to be back to around 4:30 pace!

didn't passed anyone until just after halfway but gradually reeled in about half the field to finish in 75th spot...Jodie finished about 22nd while Suze made it in 147th place...despite Jodie planning a 6:40 pace run she felt comfortable enough to run closer to sub 6:00 pace (waiting for the official time as she forgot to stop her watch)...Suze finished in just over the hour & probably covered up to 7ks thanks to Hux (who loved all of the attention he got from the runners & walkers!)...

* had to take off the HR strap around the 1.5k mark as it kept slipping (just needed adjustments i couldn't make on the run)

1k splits: 4:21, 4:31, 4:43, 4:32, 4:41, 4:36, 0:15

after stopping at the Yarralumla Bakery for a quick bite to eat (unfortunately it wasn't as good as we hoped), we spent the next couple of hours geo-caching around the Molonglo River, Eastern basin & Campbell...we did 6 all up...

home then before I headed back out to do the grocery shopping (a task i don't normally do during the cricket season)!

tonight we will be tuning in to watch the ICC Champions Trophy final, should be a good match with the West Indies the defending champions & Australia finding form leading into the Ashes...

Back to the old course...

yesterday i represented my golf club in the Canberra Shield - teams of 8 from 8 clubs playing match play...lost my match 2/1 but it was a good game as for the most part we both played quite well...just beat the rain (some didn't)...

bought a snazzy bag for my new laptop after much searching...

played (poorly) at CyberBunker last night - overdoing the golf i think!

up early this morning for the Meteors fitness session...after our usual warm up jog (where i jumped in as many puddles as i could) we spent the rest of the session in the demountable gym doing lots of core work & lots of stretchng...

finally back to the old course at Customs and another fair turnout in quite humid conditions...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 20.2/59%
start time: 12:31pm
total distance: 5.04
total time: 23:12

avg HR: 168
finish temp/humidity: 20.8/57%

1k splits: 4:29, 4:45, 4:45, 4:33, 4:33

no Jodie after this morning's session (& no Gordon either the slacker) while Flash Duck (in **very** bright orange shorts) was back from house/dog sitting in Sydney...

managed to not get passed by the first of the quicker guys until about the 3k mark...Demetrios did pass me at about 1k but he only started 15sec behind me & probably only finished 10secs in front...

the weekend ahead:
saturday - golf (early @ 7:05am!) + ?
sunday - ? maybe the Jogalong, maybe a longer run elsewhere....

Bike, laptop, short run...

that about sums up the past two days!

i left the house before Suze returned with Hux but i did see them on my way around the pond...pretty clear run this morning but an ominous hissing sound on arrival...

been busy researching laptops on the 'net and finally decided which one i wanted to replace a very slow & old secondhand HP i have...made arrangements for super negotiator Suze to get me after work to go purchase it...

"Posture & Flexibility" was good, no Squashy Frog but lots of other interesting stretches!

i bought a Toshiba Satellite A100 (Intel Core Duo, 1.6Ghz, 512MB, 80GB, CD/DVD burner, 15.4" widescreen with XP Pro)...got a pretty good deal through Harvey Norman which included extended warranty, Internet Security software (Trend Micro PC-cillin) & a travel surge protector...

had no desire to see if i really had a flat tyre and wanted to play with the new toy so got a lift home with Suze...

got it all set up & running well...will make running my cricket stats programs (amongst other things!) so much faster...

had to go back to Harvey Norman this morning to exchange the travel surge protector as they'd given me a two-prong one instead of a three-prong one but no hassle there...

meant to do a 60min easy run at lunch but about halfway through had no desire to continue so returned to work...
