Paddy Pallin Urban 2015...

left work early on Friday to pick Jodie up at 5:30pm for our road trip to Sydney…

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 20.9/59% (apparent temp 17.9)
start time: 4:17pm
total distance: 17.65
total time: 42:51 (including 1:04 stopped time)
avg speed: 24.7kph
total calories: 334
avg HR: 125

after stopping for petrol at Costco, for food in Goulburn and drinks at Pheasant’s Nest we checked into our accommodation (just down the road from Prince Alfred Park, race HQ) at about 9pm…

up at 7, we packed up, had breakfast, checked out (but left the car at the hotel) and walked down to the start…

we picked up our rego pack which contained our shirts (free for being one of the first 200 teams to register, race numbers with team name (Davcal Express) and other promo stuff…Paddy Pallin had a stand there so we also bought a waterproof map case as I hadn’t been able to find mine…next we paid for a Fast Forward pass ($20) for the charity, Cancer Council NSW, checkpoint…

race briefing got underway at about 8:50am with the start just after 9am…it always starts with a mad dash to collect a clue sheet off one of the volunteers…

there were 20 listed although one was crossed out as it was washed out so we had 19 clues to solve…actually it was only 18 due to the fast forward pass…this year we didn't have to visit a set number of controls (2012 was 14/20, 2014 15/20)...each checkpoint was worth points ranging from 10-14 and you just had to get as many points as possible within the 6hr time-frame...there was a penalty of one point per minute for the first ten minutes late then 10pts per minute after that...

Jodie worked on the odd clues while I worked on the evens…google was utilised as we plotted each checkpoint on the map, some were quite obscure but we ended up locating all of them and plotting a route in just under an hour…

Checkpoint 16: Over, Under & Thru (30 points) In a sandstone uni, worn out from studying for the right to wear a wig, head out the front, not to the old lawns but to the new lawns and tackle this gig

it was off to Sydney Uni for the first one to do an obstacle course on the lawns of the Law School…under cargo netting, over an A-frame and through the tyres we went…

Checkpoint 11: Be a water baby (40 points) In a park named after a birthday in 1988 at the end of a road through the suburb whose league team was short lived and filthy you will take to the water

this one was quite a trek to Bicentennial Park at Glebe Point to paddle…

Checkpoint 5: I can’t see what I’m doing! (20 points) In a park they race dogs, if one was to escape and had a taste for seafood they would pass this checkpoint on their dash for fish

at Wentworth Park, Jodie guided me (I was blindfolded) in setting up a tent…

Checkpoint 10: Hoops (10 points) Take the first name of the 2nd in line to the British Throne, the first name if the man who introduced cars to the masses (and the number associated with their most famous sportscar) and you are in ultimate*(sic)

at the Ultimo Community Centre at 40 henry William Street, one of us had to sink a free throw and the other a 3-pointer…Jodie had the free-throw done quickly but I was struggling with the 3-pointer due to the chest mounted Go-Pro so we switched and were soon on our way…

Checkpoint 19: Add it Up (20 points) DVII Kilo Echo November Tango Sierra Tango Romeo Echo Echo Tango

507 Kent Street is the address for the Paddy pallin shop and we had to locate and price five items on a list and give the correct total…

Checkpoint 20: Brisbane ’88 (10 points) In the building attached to Sydney’s favourite meeting place. Enter from the street named after a Western Sydney suburb without the hill and find the Paddy Pallin Stand

this was located inside the Travel Expo at Town Hall, entering off Druitt Street…

Checkpoint 6: Find the Ramator (20 points) On a bridge that is sometimes closed, sometimes open up to 83 degrees you will find a sheepish looking character strolling around

down to Darling Harbour we went and across Pyrmont Bridge to find a guy with a rams head located outside the Pyrmont Bridge pub…

Checkpoint 1: Nice Outfits (20 points) On the North West corner of the a former parade ground featuring a statue of the man who founded Scot’s Church in 1826 you will find a smartly dressed person in the latest gear from Marmot

Wynyard Park was the location for this one – we had to find the first person who gave us a password and a drscritpion of the next person, we gave us another password and the description of the last person who we had to give the two passwords to…

Checkpoint 17: Connect Three (20 points) isthay eckpointchay isyay atyay ethay ingkay eorgegay vay ecray entrecay inyay ethay ocksray, easyyay!

we had a bit of a wander around The Rocks before we located this one (google maps was not helpful!) at the King George V Recreation Centre where we had to put together a wooden puzzle…thankfully we got his one solved quickly…two teams were puzzling over it when we arrived and were surprised when we put it together in about a minute!

Checkpoint 2: What is that from??? (20 points) Go through The Cut that was constructed by convicts between 1843-1859 and at #17 you will find a room named after an ex Lord mayor of Sydney

we had a rough idea to go but it took some directions from other teams to find this one at the Abraham Mott and Harry Jensen Community Centre/Hall…here we had to name 10 movies from a list of 50 pieces of music playing…we had named two before we even sat down so it didn’t take long to get the rest…

Checkpoint 14: Pay it Forward (10 points) Go shopping on the way for one of the items below then head to opposite of smooth, combined with edges
Food stuffs accepted: canned meat, beef stew, chilli, soup, chicken, canned fish, tuna, salmon, sardines, dry beans, peanut butter, canned fruits, canned vegetables, canned juices, spaghetti sauce, jam, baking mix, cake mix, dry cereal, sugar, shelf stable milk, evaporated milk & powdered milk

this one was located a little out of the way on Victoria Street in Darlinghurst so we caught the train from Circular Quay to Kings Cross…we bought some sardines and peanut butter at one of the little convenience stores…

with about 50 minutes to go we caught the train back to Central where there was a chance to visit one more check point…

Checkpoint 18: Shake your booty (20 points) Take a tasty sauce you put on your tacos, add the form of government many say Australia should adopt and this is where you shake you booty on the street named for she who was Queen of Scots…

this was the Salsa Republic dance studio on Mary Street…having done a (pole) dancing one last year we knew this would take about 15mins to do and we didn’t know if there would be a queue as they normally do them in small groups… we opted not to push it and headed for the finish…

Checkpoint 9: Your good deed for the day (20 points) In the Love Heart of Sydney are the crew from our charity partner, find them and give them a hand

our fast Forward pass meant we could check in at the finish for this checkpoint and then spike the finish control to finish with just over 28 minutes to spare…

checking the results later that night, we ended up with 240 points which put us 41st out of 70 in the females teams and 121th out of 180 overall…only two teams (both male) collected all 19 checkpoints, the best mixed team and female team collected 18…

back to the hotel we went to get the car and head home…with two stops on the way for food and drinks, I was back home after dropping Jodie off by 7pm…

yesterday I was up early to head down to Rond Terrace for the Jackie Fairweather Memorial Sprint Triathlon…Tim and Al were racing…when I got there I found out that it was now a duathlon with the lake closed due to the run off from the heavy rain earlier in the week…this meant the 750k swim was now a 2k run followed by the usual 20k bike and a 5k run…

due to the re-arrangement their wave ended up getting underway just before 8 (instead of 7:19am)…mum and dad, with Madeleine, made in time and I ended up entertaining Madeleine for the duration of the event while still getting around to see and take photos of Tim at different points around transition…

Tim finished in 1:06:51, 31st overall and 1st M40-44…Al 1:13:44 (85th/12th M40-44)…also spotted Dave B 1:15:18 (=101st, 1 M65-69) and Tom P 1:51:56 (184th/7th M55-59)…

back home about 11ish and watched cricket for the rest of the day before taking the boys for a walk…
