parkrun #21 and duathlon #2...

you guessed it, it was windy on the way home Friday night...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 11.7/53% (apparent temp 9.6)
start time: 5:38pm
total distance: 17.65
total time: 51:04 (including 1:14 stopped time)
avg speed: 20.7kph
total calories: 411
avg HR: 126

instead of running with Hodge and taking parkrun (#21, #19 at Tuggeranong) on Saturday easy, I decided to work hard...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 10.8%/63 (apparent temp 8.4)
start time: 8:02am
total distance: 4.99
total time: 22:38
avg pace: 4:32
total calories: 329
avg HR: 157
recovery HR: 108/65

splits: 4:32, 4:34, 4:36, 4:32, 4:25

it was warm but windy so I was pretty pleased with the split consistency...the last is a bit faster because a woman I passed with about a k to go passed me back with about 200m to go...I couldn't resist a kick and managed to beat her and nearly catch the next runner!

30th out of 208, age 70.84%...7th female out of 107...1st W45-49 out of 17...no unknowns ahead of me this week...

golf (stableford) started off well but then it became very average and I ended up playing 8 over my handicap...squiggle came along to caddie for Tammie (in a cart) and did an excellent job cleaning up her clubs...

for a surprise we took squiggle to NightFest...mum, dad, Jodie and Lisa came as well and it was a good night...

today was the day for my second official duathlon with my participation in the ACT Duathlon Championships...this time it was of standard length - 10k/40k/5k...my goals were to average less than 5mins per k on the runs legs and take between 80-100 for the bike leg...

my bike was in place about 90mins prior to race start (I had the only MTB on the racks) so Ewen and I had a chat and checked out the mount and dismount spots...conditions were good with not much of a breeze...

the race got underway at 9:17am after a slight delay to make sure the run turn official was in place...

the first run leg was about 430m short of 10k...

the cycle leg was a challenge with the hilly bits leading into the far turnaround...the leader was heading into his final transition before I had finished my second lap on the bike!...meanwhile Ewen and I were exchanging bell rings each time we crossed paths...

I didn't pass anyone on the ride as you would expect (and one of my fellow competitors after the race said "mate, you have to get a road bike"!)...I think I only beat about 6 or so competitors time-wise for the bike leg...

I passed two runners before the turn then reeled in two more by the finish...

my plan was to finish in under three hours...I finished in 2:47:04!

now for the stats!

run leg 1 (10k)
start temp/humidity: 11.6/59% (apparent temp 10.7)

start temp/humidity: 13.0/56% (apparent temp 11.8)
start time: 10:04am
total distance: 39.84
total time: 1:33:40, measured mount to dismount lines (official split 1:34:45)

avg pace: 4:55
total calories: 348

splits: 4:52, 4:56, 5:02, 5:09, 4:11

my transitions were good compared to the sprint - T1 1:19, T2 0:55

  • 108 entered / 96 finished, 2 DNF'd while 10 didn't start
  • fastest male was Nuru Somi (open) 1:48:35
  • fastest female was Christine Wolfson (W45-49) 2:08:40
  • W45-49: 7 entered, 6 finished while 1 didn't start
  • W45-49 winner was christine Wolfson in 2:08:40 (1st female overall)
  • my time was 2:47:04, 81st overall, 25th female out of 31, 6th W45-49
  • run 1 split 45:54 - 68th overall, 16th female, 5th W45-49
  • cycle split 1:34:45 - 80th overall, 27th female, 5th W45-49
  • run 2 aplit 24:09 - 54th overall, 14th female, 4th W45-49
  • Ewen finished 72nd in 2:39:28 (46:14/1:24:51/26:23)

mum and dad were there for the whole event...best supporters ever!

after a shower and a bit of break, we took the boys to the dog park..

I'm glad tomorrow is a public holiday!

Awesome effort Bron. Yep you need a road bike!

Well done! The bell rings were good fun :) Liked your sprint finish to the 5k. If you want a versatile road bike, something like the Giant Anyroad CoMax would be good - carbon frame, can go off road, drop bars - but these days drop bars are wider and you can get down low for aerodynamics (also fit tri bars if you want). Wind resistance makes a bigger difference the faster you go - google research data on that.

Tim had suggested that bike but it's a bit out of my price range plus I'm not a drop bar fan (or more to the point, my back isn't!)...

It has a pretty high stack measurement - top of the bars could be level or above the height of your seat with a different stem. Study geometry specs on websites. Try and find a 2nd handy or a few years old new one on bike exchange. I got a very good deal on my 2014 cyclocross bike.

Forgot to say for general riding you spend most of your time on the top of the bars o hoods anyway.
