Night Orienteering With Lights Series (OWLS) - Mt Rogers

the second OWLS event was on Mt Rogers with the registration area off Wickens Pl...

we chose the short, moderate navigation course (Barking Owl) at 3.3k with a map scale of 1:5000 (last week was 1:10000)...the rain had stopped and conditions were cool but not cold...

start temp/humidity: 15.6/98% (apparent temp same)
start time: 6:28pm
total distance: 5.11 (3.3 "as the crow flies")
total time: 65:25
avg pace: 12:47
total calories: 266
avg HR: not record
recovery HR: n/a

official splits: 1:42, 14:53, 3:29, 7:05, 1:42, 2:33, 2:18, 4:13, 3:31, 2:40, 2:04, 9:34, 4:24, 2:30, 1:36, 1:11

we started off to #1 ok and then were doing well to #2 until we missed the trail to the left (the one which lead to #3) I wanted to angle off so we ended up at the bottom of the trail then overshot the little trail back up to #2...then I followed the powerlines to try and find the last one to angle off which we did eventually...almost a quarter of our time was wasted on this leg!

the rest of the course went mainly error free...we did find it hard to see through the misty fog at times...some of the trails were quite tricky to spot...
