An honour...

Thursday’s rides to & from work were quite zippy, most be the warmer weather…these are also my last commutes on this route…I’m not disappointed to miss the swooping of the magpie in Franklin and the kamikaze one on Gungahlin Drive (southbound only!)!!

skipped gym at lunch as I was a bit busy…

what can I say about Friday?

I was very honoured (and a touch embarrassed!) to be inducted into the ACTEWAGL ACT Sport Hall of Fame as a full member alongside Miriam Manzano (ice skating), Siobhan Patton (swimming) and Jeremy Paul (rugby)…Frank Cleary (horse racing) and Bob Mouatt (orienteering) were inducted as associate members…while the biggest stars were Alex Jesaulenko (Australian Rules) and Heather McKay (squash) were inducted as Athletes of the Century…

each inductee was introduced and had their nomination read out – Mark Vergano and the Board of Cricket ACT had nominated me – before a video testimonial was played together with some footage of me playing for Australia…to my surprise Jodie (as a level 3 coach, she turned me into an allrounder, although I always consider myself a bowler who could bat a bit!), Andrew Dawson (long time Cricket ACT employee and current coach of the ACT Meteors) and Belinda Clark (my former NSW & Australian captain) provided some very kind words about me…

unlike the other inductees I chose a Q&A interview with Tim Gavel as I am dreadful at public speaking…apparently it went down well, judging by the comments of others…got a chuckle when Tim asked me how things have changed and my first response was the length of my hair!

I was very pleased that my parents (who really should have been given the award due to all the support they gave me through my career), my partner and my two closest friends could be part of the occasion…

My nomination:

Bronwyn Calver was an outstanding allrounder who represented Australia, ACT and NSW. Bronwyn was an extremely accurate and skilful medium pace bowler and an attacking middle order bat.

Bronwyn represented the ACT from 1983 until 1995 at national championship level (1518 runs @ 28.11, 100 wickets @ 19.39) and was selected to represent Australia in 1991, matching the achievement of her great friend (and later coach) Jodie Davis who played for Australia in 1988.

From 1991 to 1998, Bronwyn played three Test matches against England (women’s Test matches are rare) and 34 One Day Internationals which included two World Cups (1993 and 1997).

In ODIs, Bronwyn was not only a wicket taker (29 @ 22.41, best bowling 4/4) but also had a great economy rate of 2.3 runs per over. Her batting with an average of 53.4 at a strike rate of 75.2 showed she could score runs (534, HS 81no) while placing a high price on her wicket.

In 1995 ACT withdrew from senior national competition and with the formation of the Women's National Cricket League (WNCL) in 1996, Bronwyn was selected to play for NSW which enabled her to continue her career at the highest level.

Bronwyn’s achievements for NSW (1996-2004) were also outstanding, scoring 509 runs @ 18.85 (2 x 50s, HS 61no) and taking 95 wickets @ 22.96 (best bowling 3/18). Over eight seasons, she played 80 matches and won seven WNCL titles.

Bronwyn was enticed out of retirement in 2006 to help the fledgling ACT team prepare for its entry into the WNCL in 2009-10. Bronwyn added great experience to the team in the CA Cup and in her last match, against South Australia, returned the remarkable figures of 10 overs, 9 maidens, 7 wickets for 2 runs with the two runs being wides! She still had it!

Bronwyn is still involved in the game as both the women’s statistician for Cricket Australia and the on-line scorer at Manuka Oval.

Who would have thought that the 13 year old in this photo, getting ready to play her first senior match of representative cricket for the ACT back in 1982 and only dreaming of playing for Australia, would achieve this huge honour??!

Saturday I was up early to be out at Black Mountain Peninsula for the Kingston Physiotherapy West Basin 10mile run…I’d run this back in 2011 and was hoping to run around 5min k pace in preparation for the inaugural Capital Run 14k next week…

I started off well but dropped off the pace a bit over the last 4ks but still pleased to finish in 83:10 which was just over 5:30 faster than last time…

then it was off to golf for the monthly medal where I managed to shoot 83 off the stick for a net 70 to win the medal by 1 shot!...I had two birdies (9th & 14th) as well as a triple bogey (11th) & double bogey (18th)!

Sunday was moving day with all of the large bits of the move done in two trips…I picked up the truck at 8am and wasn’t back to Kambah at the end of it all until 9:30pm!

this morning I dropped the truck off and drove to work, thankfully it’s a rest day!!

doing some more bits & pieces at Harrison after work…I’m borrowing mum & dad’s trailer to load up with junk for a tip run!
