no parkrun this morning as Jodie and I were teaming up as Davcal Express for the Urban Polaris...
up early, I picked Jodie up at 6:30am and we arrived at the Old Bus Depot just before 7:00am...we picked up our rego kit and then unloaded the bikes...8am was our start time (starts were in 10min intervals from 8am to 8:30am with 7hrs allowed from your start time...
once back inside, we set about marking the map with all 38 checkpoints...the map was The Canberra and Queanbeyan Cycling and Walking map...double-sided and big, made folding tricky...
as we had to present to the start 10mins before our time, we just had enough time to mark the map, put the personalised numbers on our bikes and put any unnecessary gear back in the car!
as we moved through to the start line, we received the values of the checkpoints...this was never really going to affect our planned route which was basically to head north...
the first checkpoint on our list was at the Canberra Railway Museum...no problem
the second checkpoint was the WWI training trenches...we got to the location I had marked and there was nothing there, it wasn't until we googled the info that we realised I had marked the wrong grid square and that we need to be on Dairy Flat Rd (oops)...even then we took a bit longer to find it as we weren't sure exactly where to go...
from there we went up to the top of Mt Pleasant for the third checkpoint...Jodie did well to ride all the way up...
the fourth checkpoint was The Ride Shop in Braddon...
the fifth checkpoint was in Dickson at the site of the first cycle path opened in the ACT in 1973 and we went to the point I had marked (which was correct when checked later) only to find that the checkpoint was at the Challis St end instead of the Cowper St end...
from there we zipped up the back of Hackett (Hackett Houses Track) to collect checkpoint six....checkpoint seven was at the Starlight Drive-in sign - along the way we called into Watson shops to grab a snack for Jodie and a drink for me...
checkpoints eight and nine were in Amaroo (Crinigan's Hut Ruins) and Ngunnawal (Gold Creek Homestead) respectively...
checkpoint ten was in Evatt at the site of an unmarked cemetery...
checkpoint eleven was at Cycle Surgery in Florey and we also stopped at the bakery where we re-assessed our progress while we ate...
checkpoint twelve was at John Knight Memorial Park followed by thirteen at the AIS Visitor's Centre where we crossed paths with Janene and Gregg
checkpoint fourteen was at the Black Mountain electrical substation...fifteen was the Surveyors Camp/Scrivener Plant Room near Parliament House, ACT's first concrete building...
checkpoint sixteen was the National Gallery setout stone, followed by seventeen at Manuka Oval...at this stage Jodie's butt had had enough so we headed back to check-in with 41mins to spare...all up we collected 260 points in covering nearly 75k...
