the AFL premiership season started with a close one with Richmond coming from behind to beat Carlton...
Friday I walked the boys before heading in to UCan for the Aus-3 day prologue event...the elites (men & women, senior & junior - 20 & under) were just finishing as I got there...mum & dad turned up in time to see Shane Rattenbury open the carnival and watch the presentations to the top 3 in the elite classes...
the first start for the public prologue was at 1:30pm - there were four courses available...Hard 1 (3.8k/23 controls), Hard 2 (3.0k/20 controls), Moderate (2.5k/14 controls) and Easy (1.6k/9 controls)...
the Hard 1 course was the same as used for the elite men and junior men while the Hard 2 course was used by the elite women and junior women...I had entered the Hard 1 course and was hoping to go around double (or better) than the elite men's winning time (15:51 by Matt Crane, best junior was Matt Doyle in 16:11)...
how this sort of carnival works is that you arrive at least 3mins before your start time (my start time was 1:39pm)...you clear your sportident stick of data...with 3mins to go, the official ticks your name off the list...2mins before the start, you move forward, check sportident stick is cleared of data and collect a copy of the control descriptions...1min before the start you move forward, you write your name/number on the back of the map and wait for the start...on the long beep you go - this event did not require you to punch the start control but you did have to run within 5m of the start control which was 75m away...all courses were structured such that you had to pass the start control...6 people started at the same time at one minute intervals...
the map scale was 1:4000 (1cm = 40m) so there was lots of detail to process as you made your decision on how to approach the first control...we had to deal with the rabbit warren of the residences and also read the map for any hidden access points which was particularly useful getting from #17 to #18...a number of competitors missed the hidden stairway and took the long way around!
100 people started the Hard 1 course...93 finished, 5 mispunched and 2 DNF'd...I had a pretty clear run to finish in 25:54 (41st)...

a quick shower and change when I got home then we were off to Sydney for the Royal Easter Show...we stayed at the Ibis Budget Hotel which was only one block away, parking through the hotel was cheaper too...
Jodie and Lisa flew up so we met them at the hotel then we were at the show from not longer after 1pm until about 10pm...
yesterday I was up before the sun for my long run...conditions were pleasant if very humid...

I ran mostly on the River Heritage Circuit outlined the Bike Safari Circuits for Sydney Olympic Park (I ran with a copy of the map just in case!)...while the course was relatively flat, I did "run" up & down Wool-la-ra (where I ran a "T") as well as the Haslam's Creek Marker (bottom left of top pic, with an enlarged version below)...
we then spent the rest of the day until about 4pm at the Show before heading home...
this morning I took the boys on a longer walk before heading out to do the grocery shopping...
I'm planning to attend speedgygeese as there's no street O tonight...
