Customs #178

another big turnout for Customs - 30+ easy...

speedygeoff made his first appearance since March 2007 (!) and decided to run off 14:15 which, if you believe in coincidences (not!), was my start time...apparently I was his guide to not going too fast (good choice!)...

he ended up being my own personal pacer/rabbit as I tried to stay within 10m...had to hold off a fast finisher newcomer who we passed on the fountain side of Regatta Point who put her foot down for the finish after rounding the picnic area at the top of the finishing hill...SG even let me pass him and I was pretty pleased to cross the line in a time of 22:41, my fastest since 17 April last year...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 20.2/41%
start time: 12:28pm
total distance: 5.00 (4.99)
total time: 22:41 (start time 14:15)

ACT's first match of their doubleheader saw them go down to Queensland 5-17...Jodie played right field then 1st base...Suze was designated hitter then came into right field before being subbed out...hope they both get to play the last game...

I'm hoping to play golf tomorrow...

there's a new golf handicap system in place for all Australian golfers as of today...we now use a "rolling-sample" method which will be "the average of the 10 best differentials (differential = gross score - AMCR/AWCR) of your 20 most recent valid scores, the result of which is then multiplied by 0.96"

AMCR/AWCR = Australia men's or women's course rating which is essentially a course's par at the moment...

this is the first step in a move to adopt the system used by the USGA...the second step will be for each course in Australia to be given a "slope" rating (which will become the AMCR/AWCR)...this is a much more complicated kettle of fish and is unlikely to be completed until the end of 2011...

this new rolling-sample method is meant to better reflect a golfer's current form...as a result my handicap has moved from 15 out to 17 (for this week at least!), which is probably about right!...on the other hand Suze's remains at 7...

when the slope rating comes in, a player's handicap on a particular course will be adjusted to give a course handicap depending on that course's slope rating...this means on easier rated courses a player's handicap will be lower while on harder rated courses it will be higher...

Sunday sees the Women's AFL NAB pre-season Challenge take place at Duntroon and ADFA...there's two pools, one with 4 teams and one with 3...each team plays the other team in their pool in games comprising of 2 15min halves...unfortunately we are in the pool of 3 and only get to play two games unless we win both and get to play in the final...

we are drawn to play Tuggeranong (10:40am) and Eastlake (12:00pm) at ADFA (Addison Rd off Fairbairn Ave)...should be fun...and it gives us three weeks until the season proper...Ainslie, ANU, Belconnen & Queanbeyan make up the other pool...

ADFA withdrew from our pool and Riverina won't be making the trip for this one...

I like the sound of the new handicap system. Need to work harder on the game to get back those 2 shots you lost.
