Track Meet #23 2010/11

after scoring PBs at the past two track meets, I wondered if I could squeeze out one more at tonight's 5000m champs...

I arrived straight from work with enough time to check in and go for a decent warm up...this time I did 1.2k (longer event, longer warm up right?)...

on my last lap I asked Bourkie what time he was targeting, he said 4:30 pace while I said I was hoping to get close to 22:00...after the warm up I did some run-throughs over 100m to feel what 26sec/100m pace felt like...

I had the k splits for 21:50 on my hand which would be a massive PB...I figured if I could run close to these I'd be set...

4:22, 8:44, 13:06, 17:28, 21:50

there were 25 runners and the conditions were cool with not much of a breeze...10.6 degrees/74% humidity...

the race got underway just after the schedule start time of 7:50pm...

I started off a little fast then slowed in the middle as usual before bringing it home...Maria was my initial target as with last week but she soon sped off so I tried to keep within range of Graeme P...I eventually passed him with 3.75 laps to go...he asked how many laps to go and when I told him, he was disappointed it wasn't less!

with one lap to go the clock read 20:13, a PB was on the cards!...I fanged it for the last lap (well that's what it felt like!) and managed to stop the clock at 21:46.19 (official time) to finish 16th...

1k splits: 4:12, 4:30, 4:27, 4:27, 4:11

comparison with written splits: 4:12 (-10), 8:42 (-2), 13:09 (+3), 17:36 (+8), 21:47 (-3)

lap splits: 0:47, 1:42, 1:43, 1:47, 1:49, 1:47, 1:47, 1:47, 1:48, 1:46, 1:47, 1:44, 1:33

that's a PB by 25.54 seconds with my previous PB set in March 2009...and quicker than last year's champs by 35.15 seconds...

Bourkie finished in 20:43.92 (so much for 4:30 pace!) while Graeme finished in 22:08.90...Maria (21:13.86) narrowly missed out (less than 2 seconds) on Kathy S' ACT W55 record while Caroline C (23:58.02) was even closer (less than 0.5 of second) to taking Annie Y's ACT W65 record...Annie Y was the last to finish in 32:21.80, drawing the most support on the night...

Bruce G blitzed the field to finish in 16:07.47 but there were plenty of other good performances on the night...

I think I wrote to SG before this track season that my goals would be to break 3:00 consistently for the 800m and perhaps get close to 12:30 for the 3000m...

in the end I only did one 800m before electing to focus on the 1500m (x5)/3000m (x14)...

I think you'd have to rate this as a successful season to finish with 3 PBs in the last 3 meets of the season over 1500m, 3000m and 5000m!

I continue to be amazed. Those are good splits. 83 for the last lap is definitely fanging it.
