had my first skills session for the coming season with Jodie after work at Manuka...just 30mins of some batting drills inside with tennis balls - I still remember how to do it!...I'm part of her small pre-season training group (with 3 others)...I missed Tuesday night's first session as I was in Sydney so I requested a catch up...our whole squad skills training for the ACT Meteors/U19s (about 30 players) starts Sunday...the early morning (6.30-7.30am) fitness sessions start the Monday after the C2S (twice a week Mondays & Wednesdays)...

mum moved out of hospital yesterday but I went in her place with dad to the Lord's Taverners Annual Dinner last night at the Commonwealth Club (I got dad a membership for Father's Day last year)...all in all a very enjoyable, if long, evening with Rick McCosker as the guest speaker (he's the opening bat who had his jaw broken by a Bob Willis bouncer in the 1st innings of the Centenary Test in Melbourne in 1977 - before helmets became part of the game - and famously batted in the 2nd innings at #10 swathed in bandages with his jaw wired shut to make 25 and add 54 with Rod Marsh in a match Australia won by 45 runs)...

the Lord's Taverners is a benevolent association which has a primary aim to raise money to "propagate the game of cricket at all levels"...they raise money to provide sporting facilities, equipment and opportunities for under-privileged and/or disadvantaged kids (this can include those disadvantaged by financial constraint and geographical isolation)...they take a "fun in fundraising" approach - they have golf days, raffles, social cricket matches versus the British High Commission, cocktail parties, dinners before the PM's match etc...they currently assist ACT junior cricket, schools cricket, vision impaired cricketers, indigenous cricketers and disabled kid's "table top" cricket...they also have an award for the most promising young male and female cricketers in the ACT (the Graham Wilkinson Memorial Junior Lord's Taverner Award) which includes a monetary gift as well as equipment from Kookaburra (this was presented last night - there was a tie for the female award between Kirsten Burrowes & Emilee Preston)...

today I plan to make my long awaited (by me!) return to Customs!
