Ordinary run...

last night i commenced training with the ACT Meteors, the ACT women's representative squad...although i play in Sydney and have done so for the past 14 seasons (i did play here for many years prior to that), i was approached by ACT Cricket a couple of weeks ago to be part of the playing program due to my experience and basically to act as a role model (they are scraping the bottom of the barrel here!) for the younger players (by way of background, ACT Cricket want the women in the National League by 2009 as the ACT have not played at full senior level since 1994/5)...my inclusion (in the words of the coach) apparently adds "a level of hardness and steadiness" (!)...i think it's probably got more to do with being 20 years older than most of them and still being able to run around like a headless chook...

the Meteors' playing schedule covers the NSW Country Championships in Albury over the October long weekend as an invitational side, the Cricket Australia Cup in Melbourne for a week in December (against the 2nd XI sides from NSW, Qld & Vic) and finally a match against the Western Fury (WA's National League side) in Sydney also in December...

super-coach Jodie will also be involved for her technical expertise, particularly for the skills sessions although we may see her out running with us on Friday mornings!

soooo, last night was pretty full on for 2hrs (6.30-8.30pm) at the new mpowerdome in Fadden (batting/bowling etc) then this morning we had a 1hr session at Manuka before work (7-8am) which involved sprints/drills for 35mins and then ab work/stretching for 20mins...to round out the week, there's another 2hr session on Sunday (1-3pm) at the mpowerdome...

this now brings me to my ordinary run at Customs Joggers today & i am choosing to "blame" these extra physical sessions for my poor performance...

the stats:
start temp/humidity: 10.5/90%
start time: 12:32pm
total distance: 5.00
total time: 23:20
avg pace: 4:40
total calories: 373
avg HR: 169
finish temp/humidity: 10.7/88%

1k splits: 4:30, 4:38, 4:47, 4:46, 4:37

i haven't run that slowly since the start of the year so i'm hoping my body adapts (quickly!!) to the changed routine...

the conditions for today's run were fairly miserable with constant drizzle although it wasn't overly cold...still a fairly good turn up (20 or so)...i finished 2nd last, getting passed by all the quick guys with only Rick (who was walking!) behind me...

Jodie managed a respectable 29:45 starting off scratch (apparently it was pouring for the earlier runners so their times will count & be added appropriately) to extend her sub 30:00 streak to 7...

*****************************************

the weekend ahead:

saturday
- easy 40mins + golf + cricket training (last of Jodie's sessions with the small group)
sunday
- 10k TT + cricket training

23:20 is not all that slow in the conditions!
Although everyone else must have been hurrying to get out of the rain as quickly as possible.
Good luck with your new career.
Meteor among the meteorites.

We need something like that mpowerdome as a venue for indoor running!

So, that's the secret to good cricket - running around like a headless chook ;)

It's great to read about your cricketing exploits. I played a lot of cricket in my earlier days and am now just a watcher. But I still love the game. I really will look forward to more of your cricket related posts.
